Career and Employability Skills

Rules for Computer Usage:

The acceptable use policy will be strictly enforced. 

If students finish with their work early and they have no missing assignment, they can choose from the following: 

 
  • Search Career Cruising (Careers and Colleges)
  • Work on missing assignments
  • Work on other schoolwork
  • Read their A.R. book
  • Play Go Venture
  • Play Chess (Click here to go to the link).  When you get to the web site select play and play agains the computer.
  • Free Rice Vocabulary. 
  • Play typing games.

Students may not surf the net or use the computers for anything other than for school purposes.  You are not allowed to check personal e-mail.  If in doubt, please check with Mr. Lohman first.


Violating the acceptable use policy or classroom computer policies will result in the following punishment:


First offense:  You will be sent to the Responsibility Room.  Loss of computer privileges for 1 to 10 days.  The principal and your parents will be notified. 


Second offense:  You will be sent to the Responsibility Room.  Loss of computer privileges for 3 to 6 weeks.  The principal and your parents will be notified.  The student will be required to write a technology behavior plan for him/herself before computer privileges are restored. 


Third offense:  You will be sent to the Principals Office.  Your computer privileges will be permanently lost with an opportunity for review and reinstatement after 180 school days.



Grading
We will use the following categories throughout the semester for grading.
 
Quizzes and Tests 25%
Homework/Class work  25%
Projects  25%




7th grade students in the Career and Employability Skills Class will use a variety of resources on the computer in order to be successful in the class.

 

The 7th grade Career and Employability Skills class is the first class in Oakridge to use Moodle in the classroom.  Moodle is an internet based delivery system.  This means students get their assignments from Moodle and they turn their assignments in to Moodle.  There is almost no paper involved in this class.  Students can work on assignments anywhere that there is internet access. 



 

 

Career Forward is a virtual learning experience from Michigan Virtual University, where students participate in a number of different activities in order to begin thinking about where they want to be in life and what they must do now in order to reach their goals.  Career Forward also introduces the students to trends in the labor market such as changes in technology and how it relates to the workplace.  Career Forward uses mostly videos and some documents that students use to answer questions in four separate units.

 
In order to complete the questions for each module, please follow these steps.
A. In the Career Forward web site, select the appropriate Module (ie. 1, 2, 3, 4).
B. On the left hand side of the scree, you see "Useful Stuff".
C.  Find and select the questions that you are working on.
D. Save the questions to your network ID.
E. Open the Document.
D. Use the resources from Career Forward to answer the questions (questions are organized to match with the listed video or document from Career Forward).

Career Cruising is a web site that allows students to take surveys that guide them towards Career Pathways that match their interests.  Career Cruising will be used throughout each student½s middle and high school experience as students will complete their Education Development Plans (EDPs) our class in accordance to state requirements.  EDP's will be used to help students organize their career goals and to guide students in coarse selections that match their Career Pathways.  EDP�s will be updated in 8th grade and then throughout high school.



 

 


Go Venture

Go Venture is a computer based simulation that allows students to run their own business.  Students can run either a clothing or sporting goods store or they can choose to run a restaurant.

 

Students experience life as a small business owner.  They must hire and fire employees, order inventory, set schedules, advertise, conduct product development and on and on in order to run a successful business.
